The Council for NGOs in Malawi (CONGOMA) as an umbrella body of all NGOs in Malawi with the mandate to represent the collective interests and concerns of NGOs would like to join other like-minded bodies who have voiced messages of peace as the nation awaits to receive the Court judgment on the 21 May 2019 Presidential electoral case.
CONGOMA acknowledges the fact that the period towards judgment, during delivery of the judgment itself and post-judgment phase are very critical to the direction of Malawi as a nation; has huge impact on the image of our justice system and the future of our democracy. As such, CONGOMA:
Appeals to all Malawians to remain peaceful and calm. Malawi is the only country we have such that all should take part to build and not destroy it.
Calls upon Political party leaders and supporters alike to accept the Court judgment. If the judgment is favourable, let us celebrate responsibly and peacefully without deliberately inciting or provoking the losing side. Should the judgment be adverse, let us face it with courage and statesmanship. After all, there can only be one winner. Grievances after judgment can rightly be referred to the same Courts for redress and not resorting to violence.
Urges law enforcement agents to ensure tight security to protect lives and property in the run-up, during and in the aftermath of the Court judgment. Expectations are high from the public that security agents will act with utmost professionalism in ensuring law and order without discrimination, favour or ill motives. CONGOMA is pleased to note that some security agents have already expressed public commitment to do just this.
CONGOMA wishes all the parties to the case, good luck.
